The club will be running a BBQ to coincide with the Glenshee
Performance Squad end of season party. This is at Garthdee on Saturday 16th
May from 5pm to 8pm with the BBQ fired up from around 6.00pm. All members are
welcome. A great opportunity to meet up with old friends.
Performance
Glenshee Performance
Squad will be rounding off the season with the event mentioned above
including parallel slalom races, freestyle events and tubing for the trainees.
The trainees, parents and coaches from Blairgowrie and Braemar ski clubs will
be joining us at Garthdee.
Team Aberdeen, our
new junior performance coaching program run in conjunction with Aberdeen
Snowsports Centre started on 29th April at Garthdee. There was an
open meeting for interested parents on 29th April at Garthdee and
further meetings are planned for the weekend of 9/10th May. (Times
to be confirmed, check with garthdee). To date 40 trainees have signed up, with
more expected from the weekend kids clubs. This is a fantastic response and has
exceeded our expectations.

Progress on
ASC/Aberdeen Snowsports Centre relationship
Agreement has now been reached with the Centre over how ASC
and Garthdee will work together. Issues around the charitable and tax status of
the Centre have meant this process has taken some time, but key elements are as
follows:
From
1st October 2009 the 600 members of the Centre membership
scheme will become members of ASC, boosting our membership to around 800.
ASC
will take on the benefits of the Centre membership scheme and extend these
to all our members, old and new. These include excellent discounts with
local sports shops.
ASC
will amend its constitution such that the Centre manager and one other
Centre representative attend ASC committee meetings.
ASC’s
members will retain full control of the club, electing the committee as
before to run the club, including all finances etc.
The
Centre will manage the club membership list and issue cards in the
Centre’s current professional-looking plastic photo card format.
The
club will pay the Centre an admin fee of £1-2 per member to administer its
membership list, depending on the membership category.
The
Centre membership will then no longer exist separately, with regular users
at Garthdee being encouraged to join Aberdeen Snowsports Club, which will
be recognised as the home club of the centre.
ASC
will reduce its membership fees. This is currently under discussion at the
committee. Possible levels are £20 for a family (currently £50), £10 for
an adult (currently £25) and £7 for a child (currently £25).
Fees
are being reduced to encourage members in and provide excellent value for
money, but we are then aware of the need to raise money from events in
future.
It is not too late to make amendments to the arrangements
before they are implemented in time for next season, so if members have views
on these proposals we would be keen to hear them. Please email us.
Ski and Board Mart
Sell your used equipment or get a great deal on used gear!
Set your gear aside and tell all your friends!
The date has now been set for Sunday 15th
November at
Harlaw
Academy. Hand-in
equipment from 9am to 12 noon.
Sale
starts at 1.30pm for ASC members and 2pm for the general public.
Sale closes at 4pm. Unsold
equipment must be collected between 4pm and 4.30pm.
ASC retains 15% of the sale price as commission, which goes
to club funds. Just think of it as paying the equivalent of VAT to ASC instead
of the government like you would do in a shop. We are a much better cause!
If you are able to help at the Mart, or can offer any other
assistance or ideas please email us.
Snow Shuttle
Our proposed bus service from
Aberdeen to the mountains during the snow
season demonstrated that there was demand, but frustratingly we never quite got
to the 30 required to run the bus without a significant loss. As such the bus
did not run. Maybe we should have run it at a big loss the first time, but we
didn’t.
It was all arranged quite last-minute and hopefully being
able to plan ahead for next winter will help. We are working on ways to
increase take-up, such as marketing to the University Snowsports Clubs at the
Freshers Fairs to ensure Students are aware of the service. We will also make
seats available to any school snowsports clubs, where a teacher may wish to
take a small group of children. We are also working with Garthdee to see if
equipment hire could be provided from the Centre with the extra money being
used to ensure the bus can run with less people. We still think there is demand
and will have more time to get the word out for next season. Again, all ideas
welcome, by email please.
Current Committee
In order to better reflect active snowsports participants in
Aberdeen and in
preparation for our expanded membership from October, the committee elected in
November 2008 has co-opted a number of new committee members to assist in
certain areas.
The ASC constitution has served us well for many years, but
it may be due an update. Katie Barnet, our Honorary President, is leading an
effort to review the constitution and ensure it meets our needs for the future.
If you are interested in being involved please email us.
