Craigdon Schools Ski Race (30/05/2011)

Schools ski race pulls a big crowd

400 spectators watched at Aberdeen Snowsports Centre on Saturday as 38 primary school ski teams from across the northeast battled it out to be Aberdeen City & Shire ski champions.

Sponsored by Craigdon Mountain Sports and organized by Aberdeen Snowsports Club, one of the countries’s leading clubs the event, the first of its kind in Aberdeen for around 20 years, reflected the rapid growth in skiing and snowboarding over the last 3 years.

The head to head team relay format provided a thrilling spectator event.

In the end St Margaret’s beat Alford in the final to win, with Durris overcoming Kingswells for third place.

Organiser Steven Gray said “we were overwhelmed at the level of interest with over 150 competitors on the day. This is the biggest schools ski event in the UK and we now have a very strong talent pool among this age group in the northeast. With the right support there will be kids coming through our programs capable of making it to the Olympics one day. The host city for the 2018 Winter Olympics will be announced next month – some of this crop of racers could be knocking on the door of qualification at that time.”

Thanks to everyone who helped out and to the competitors to make this a very successful and enjoyable afternoon!
